Community Partnerships

One of the ways in which the people of St. John’s serve is through partnerships with other organizations located in our community. Among our partners:

Jefferson Elementary School, located at 750 St. John Street, serves children living in our immediate neighborhood. Volunteers for St. John’s assist teachers in the classroom and assist with the School’s Food and Clothing Banks. We have periodic drives for food and school supplies (see top picture), as well as providing Christmas gifts for children and families with the greatest need.

Lehigh County Office of Children and Youth Services
places children who require temporary out-of-home care in foster homes. The transition to a temporary setting can sometimes be a distressing experience. Inspire, our youth ministry at St. John’s (which is no longer active), provides backpacks filled with the supplies a child in transition often need, to help make the transition a bit less stressful for the child when called upon.

Social Ministry

The people of St. John’s serve our neighbors in various ways in our daily lives: in the work we do, through our families, neighborhoods, and communities, as citizens, and through voluntary associations. In addition, our community of faith serves our neighbors in several ways:

Allentown Ecumenical Food Bank: As we follow the example of Jesus, we help to feed hungry people in our city through this important ministry. St. John’s was the original site for this shared ecumenical service. The Food Bank is now located to 534 Chew Street in Allentown. A group of volunteers from St. John’s serves at the Food Bank on the second Friday of every month.

Lehigh Mission District Ingathering: Each December, the people of St. John’s join the Lutheran congregations of the Lehigh Mission District to serve people in need at the holidays. This program provides Christmas packages and gifts to various institutions in the Lehigh Valley. Some of the Institutions touched by this program include: Topton Home, Daybreak, Turning Point, Sixth Street Shelter, and Allentown Rescue Mission and Carenet Pregnancy Center of the Lehigh Valley.
